4th of July weekend is upon us in San Diego. Many of us plan on going to the beach or simply hanging out with friends and family. One of the more popular 4th of July pastimes is enjoying classic American BBQ.
When we think of BBQ, we normally think of burgers, hot dogs, potato salad and coleslaw. These foods, however, are not very waistline-friendly. Therefore, at your 4th of July BBQ, make some better food choices so you don’t undo all the hard work you put in at AO8.
Grilled chicken sandwiches on whole wheat buns are far better calorically than traditional beef patties on white bread. Lean protein is definitely the way to go! With a protein like chicken (instead of beef), you can still enjoy grilling with less fat and calories than the traditional hamburger.
There are lighter caloric options for coleslaw. For starters, you can always look for coleslaws with less mayonnaise. Or, you can try a crisp cilantro-lime coleslaw recipe with no mayonnaise. There are also many wonderful recipes you can find online for healthy coleslaw. Some recipes even substitute low fat Greek yogurt for the mayonnaise.
There are many wonderful choices at the local farmer’s market or the supermarket in terms of seasonal vegetables for grilling. Try wrapping zucchini or summer squash in foil and placing them straight on the grill (with a light olive oil and balsamic marinade). You can also try slicing eggplants or cauliflower and brushing them with olive oil and putting them straight on the grill like a hamburger patty. Try seasoning them with garlic salt or chili peppers for added zest.
Enjoy yourself this weekend and try and make some healthy food choices!
